USWNT Releases Statement After Crushing World Cup Loss to Sweden
For the first time since 2011, the USWNT lost in the World Cup, falling to Sweden in the round of 16 on Sunday in Melbourne. The loss also marked the earliest exit for the USWNT in World Cup history, as the lowest they ever previously finished was third place.
After the game, the team released a statement acknowledging the disappointment but also crediting the teams who did make it through to the quarterfinals.
“This year’s Women’s World Cup is a testament to the growth of Women’s soccer on a global scale and we are excited to see increased investment in these incredible players,” the statement said. “Our goal remains the same, to win. We are committed to surpassing the standard we helped create and we will rise to meet the challenge.”
While the USWNT leaves the World Cup disappointed, other teams are experiencing their best performance ever at the tournament. As a result, the Americans will have to evolve and adapt to tougher competition at the biggest stage in women’s soccer.
