Sunderland came into this game determined not to drop more points to a passive opponent for the second consecutive game.

With Sheffield Wednesday firmly rooted to the foot of the table, averaging just two shots on target a game and even fewer goals; this was a game that Sunderland had to win to have any ambition of matching play-off expectations.

Mowbray chose to push his midfield forward this evening to lean on the Wednesday nerves and the 4,000 travelling fans did not have to wait long, as the first corner of the evening saw Dan Ballard nod home the opener in only the third minute.

The game had barely restarted before Mason Burstow put Jack Clarke into an ocean of space on the left for him to show just how deadly he is in full flight.

Burstow turned provider again on the half hour mark as he turned Diaby in the box to claim a penalty which Jack Clarke buried in the corner to take him to the top of the Championship scoring charts. He’s now scored a third of his career goals this season alone.

And with that, the game was as good as over. There were flashes of skill from Patrick Roberts and a very positive 30 minutes from Adil Aouchiche, but for the most part the game played out as an opportunity to get minutes in the legs for some substitutes.

Patterson was called into action late on to help Sunderland keep their third clean sheet this season.

This was a ruthless display by Sunderland to earn three points. So if you want see just how Mowbray made a dead parrot out of the Owls then take a look at ‘Hunting Night Owls at Hillsborough’.
