Rather surprisingly took a defensive approach to the afternoon, sitting low in a 4-5-1 formation and conceding our entire half. And so the Lads faced their usual problem of breaking down a team who were not prepared to play to win.

Sunderland attacked hard right from the whistle but it was Norwich who scored first when Sunderland failed to play until the whistle for an offside that never was and Hwang opened the scoring for the little yellow birds.

Sunderland roared immediately back though, and it wasn’t long before Trai Hume equalised with a typical deep ball to the back post from the half spaces that Shane Duffy chested into his own net.

As the game progressed, Sunderland exerted more control and had more chances. Jack Clarke proverb nearly unplayable today and it was no surprise to see him scythe through the Norwich back line and lay off a defence splitting pass for Dan Neil to lift into the far corner as the Lads went into halftime in the lead.

The second half saw more Sunderland dominance, but Anthony Pattrerson was called into service to keep a flurry of Norwich chances out. Then Mowbray freshened the pace with a series of substitutes and the chances continued to come and it was Jack Clarke who found reward for himself with a penalty midway through the half to secure the points on the day.

So take a look at the video of just how the Black Cats crushed the Canaries and see some analysis on those short corners, deep balls from the half spaces, Nazariy Rusyn’s full debut and an improving Hemir.
