Sunderland take on league leaders Burnley at Turf Moor on Friday night and Jarred Gillett will be the referee for the Championship clash.

Gillett will be joined by Derek Eaton and Natalie Aspinall as his assistants, as well as John Busby taking up the role of fourth official.

The Australian referee started his career in the A-league during the 2010/11 season and went on to officiate in five Hyundai A-League Grand Finals, as well as receive the Hyundai A-League Referee of the Year on five occasions.

After his fourth Hyundai A-League Referee of the Year in 2016/17, he became the most successful referee in A-league history.

Gillett then joined the select group 2 of referees in England at the start of the 2019/20 season, where he went on to make his debut in the EFL.

Since then he has gone on to join the select group 1 of referees, and officiate across all branches of English football, from the Premier League to League Two.

Gillett brings a wealth of experience and refereeing accolades to Turf Moor on Friday night, and Sunderland will be hoping that this will benefit them against top of the table Burnley.

Gillett's record for Sunderland

Gillett has made the majority of his appearances this season in the English top flight since achieving his select group 1 status, taking charge of 12 games in the Premier League.

However he has officiated for Sunderland once before in the 2019/20 League One season, where Gillett was the man in the middle for Sunderland's 1-0 loss away to Shrewsbury.

Gillett has also refereed one game this season involving Sunderland's opponents on Friday night.

He took charge of Burnley's 2-1 win at home to West Brom earlier this season.

Gillett is a relatively unknown referee for The Black Cats, but certainly holds a lot of praise from Australia and brings a vast amount of top level experience.

Gillett's overall record this season

Games: 21
Yellow cards: 65
Red cards: 2
Penalties awarded: 6
Cards per game: 3.19
