Coventry 2-1 Sunderland: Player Ratings as Black Cats frustrated
Sunderland sank to a second 2-1 defeat in a week as Coventry got the best of them in an eventful game at the CBS Arena.
The result makes it three games in a row without a win now for Sunderland, who will at least now get a break form their frantic schedule of late.
Amad Diallo grabbed the Sunderland goal in injury time, but it was too little too late as life without Ross Stewart appeared to finally catch up with Tony Mowbray's young side.
Here is now the players rated.
Sunderland player ratings vs Coventry
Anthony Patterson - Couldn't have done anything with either of the goals. Not much more was asked of him. 6
Trai Hume - Secured the right-back spot. Solid for the most part without being spectacular. 6
Danny Batth - Given a bit of a run around by Gyokeres, who is to my mind, by far and away the best forward we've faced this season. Very rarely has his lack of pace been exposed quite so blatantly. 5
Dan Ballard - Looked a little more secure than Batth, but still given a difficult afternoon by Coventry's centre forward. 6
Alese - Probably the player most to blame for Coventry's opener. Does well 75% of the time and then gets a little exposed positionally. 6
Dan Neil - Replaced around the hour mark. Lots of moments of quality as usual, but like the rest of the team, unable to show the incision needed. 6
Edouard Michut - More of the same. Very good technical player who isn't quite there yet physically. 6
Patrick Roberts - Didn't really happen for him today. As always, he had glimpses of pure quality, but he was unable to create any real good chances or get on the ball consistently enough. Occasionally held onto the ball for too long. 6
Amad Diallo - Gave the ball away extremely sloppily a few times in the first 20 minutes. Scored a brilliant goal, but he's not at his best at the moment. 6
Jack Clarke - Did pretty well for the most part. Always offers the option to switch the play and it feels like he's playing with a lot of confidence. 7
Joe Gelhardt - He's a good player who's being asked to do a ludicrously difficult job for a player of his experience. It's not his fault he's not a rounded centre forward at the age of 20. I think he's getting better. 6
SUBS
Luke O'Nien - Spread the play nicely a few times. Think it's time to reintroduce him to the starting eleven. We miss him. 6
Alex Pritchard - A couple of good touches, a couple of disappointing moments. Not pressing quite as sharply as I thought he was earlier in the season. 6
Pierre Ekwah - Added size and played very competently. 6
Abdoullah Ba - Always tidy but still not quite sure what he is as a player. 6
Jewison Bennette - Looked pretty neat when he came on. 6
