Sunderland announced earlier today that Bailey Wright has left the club by mutual consent.

Wright, 30, leaves Sunderland by mutual consent after three-and-a-half years at the club.

He initially joined on loan from Bristol City before making his stay permanent, going on to make 106 total appearances for the Black Cats and scoring four goals.

Wright helped the club lift the EFL Trophy in 2021 before playing a key role in the club's promotion-campaign in the 2021/22 season.

Last time round, the Australian international fell down the pecking order, spending the second half of the season on loan at Rotherham United.

Now though, Wright will go on to pursue opportunities overseas.

Writing in the club statement, Wright had this parting message:

“I’ve loved my time at Sunderland and I’ve had some incredible experiences with some great people. I look back on what has been an incredible journey – the highs of Wembley wins to the lows that came before – and I wouldn’t change a thing about my experience.

"You want to try and leave an impression and ensure the Club is in a better place than when you found it, and I feel like I’ve been part of a group that has done that. I want to say thank you to the fans for the support I’ve had since day one.

"It’s a special Club that’s moving in the right direction and my family have loved living here and being a part of that. I hope you enjoy the years ahead and that there are many more successes to come.”

Goodbye, Bailey...

Wright leaves as a firm fan favourite. Even during the darker times in League One, Wright was a player who put in consistent performances and always gave his all for the shirt, captaining the club on many occasions.

But the arrivals of names like Nectarios Triantis and Jenson Seelt only pushes Wright further down the pecking order and perhaps a departure this summer is the best move for all involved.

Sunderland fans will no doubt wish him all the best for the future.
