Sunderland's summer ahead looks promising. But the summer of 2024 could be a much more testing one for them.

The Black Cats have a number of first-team players out of contract next year, with some of them being very important players too.

Here we look at all the Sunderland players whose contracts expire in 2024...

Patrick Roberts

One of many favourites within the team, Roberts played a key role for Sunderland last season, scoring a hugely important goal in the late 2-2 comeback draw v Watford in April which helped the Black Cats on their way to the play-offs. A new deal for the 26-year-old seems inevitable.

Dennis Cirkin

Cirkin is a very promising and valuable player in the side. Injury hampered his 2022/23 season but expect the club to be working on a new deal for the defender, who signed from Spurs in 2021.

Corry Evans

Sunderland did Evans a gratitude by handing him an extended deal until 2024 after he sustained an ACL injury last season. He looks set to make his comeback before the end of the year, but whether he'll have enough time to warrant a new deal remains to be seen.

Luke O'Nien

The 29-year-old was one of the standout players for Sunderland last season. He played in almost every position on the pitch and gave his all in every performance. Expect him to play another important role next season and expect him to be in line for an extended deal.

Bailey Wright

Wright left on loan in January, joining Rotherham United. Injury brought his time in South Yorkshire to a premature end and where he now stands in Mowbray's first-team remains to be seen. He remains an experienced and useful player though.

Lynden Gooch

Gooch has been with Sunderland through thick and thin. He put up some good numbers once again last season, featuring 32 times in the Championship. But he could be one who is potentially let go at the end of next season if someone a bit younger is brought in.

Ross Stewart

The big one. Stewart's future has been a talking point for a while now and expect his contract to come into headlines soon after the start of next season. Right now, his focus will be on a return to fitness. But a new contract will surely be on the minds of those behind the scenes.

Alex Pritchard

Pritchard was originally out of contract this summer but he saw a one-year extension triggered. He showed his quality in the Championship last season, recording 11 goal contributions. But at 30 years old and having had injury problems in the past, he could be playing for his future next season.

Danny Batth

Like Pritchard, Batth had his contract extended beyond this summer. Sunderland fans' Player of the Season was immense in the Championship and he'll be expected to perform once again next season. Despite turning 33 later this year, a new contract could be a smart move.
