EXCLUSIVE: Luke O'Nien set to sign new Sunderland deal
Sunderland are very close to agreeing a new deal with Luke O’Nien, Sunderland Nation can reveal.
The 28-year-old has been a revelation since joining from Wycombe in the summer of 2018, overcoming some early struggles to become one of the most popular players in recent history.
A key part of that popularity is the huge love he has for the club, and that was underlined in 2021 when he rejected Championship offers to sign a new deal with the then-League One Black Cats.
He is now in the final year of that deal, though, and O’Nien’s stock has risen again after proving himself a hugely versatile and consistent Championship performer.
Sunderland have no intention of letting anyone else get near him, though, and talks to extend his contract are at an advanced stage.
The indefatigable O’Nien has just passed his five-year anniversary at Sunderland, and he has no desire to be anywhere else either.
“Today I celebrate five years since I joined this incredible club,” O’Nien tweeted over the weekend.
“My family and I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for welcoming us in as your own & the incredible memories that have come with our time on Wearside! Let’s have some more.”
