Sunderland started the day in 7th after Millwall beat Blackpool in the Championship last night.

And the Black Cats welcomed Watford for their final home game of the regular season, in what promised to be a tough outing for Tony Mowbray's side.

The Hornets took a lead into half-time after Christian Kabasele struck home early on, and then Chris Wilder saw his side go two goals ahead with Ryan Porteous scoring soon after the hour mark.

But Luke O'Nien replied almost immediately to get Sunderland back in the game, before a late, sublime strike from Patrick Roberts handed the home side a much-needed point.

So how does the Championship play-off picture look now?

Luton Town and Middlesbrough had already confirmed their play-off spot before today.

Coventry City have all but sealed their spot in the top six after beating Birmingham City 2-0 earlier today, leaving the Sky Blues in 5th place of the table and three points ahead of Sunderland in 7th.

Millwall sit a point behind Coventry and two ahead of Sunderland, with 8th place Blackburn Rovers in action against Luton on Monday, with 9th place West Brom playing Norwich City this evening.

For Sunderland then, a top six finish remains well on the cards, but they'll need to win at Preston North End next weekend.

Blackburn Rovers can leapfrog Sunderland with a win on Monday but Rovers have an inferior goal difference as things stand.

West Brom can move level on points with Sunderland if they beat Norwich tonight, but they too have an inferior goal difference compared to the Black Cats.

Millwall host Blackburn Rovers next weekend in what's panned out to be a huge game in the play-off picture, whilst Coventry travel to Middlesbrough.

Sunderland v Preston North End kicks off at 3pm on Monday the 8th of May.
