It wasn't an especially happy Sunderland debut for Callum Styles, and he didn't mince his words about the result.

Callum Styles did not mince his words when asked about his Sunderland debut, saying the result is ‘just so annoying.’

Styles joined Sunderland on an initial loan deal from Barnsley in January but appendix surgery meant he had to wait to make his first appearance.

That came in the 2-1 home defeat to Swansea and, while he loved the experience, he was as irritated as anyone by the result.

'There is a mentality issue' at Sunderland, claims head coach Mike Dodds

Speaking about his debut, Styles said: "It was earlier than expected. I've worked hard to get back to fitness.

“Obviously the result isn't what everyone wanted but to be out on the pitch in front of the fans is my goal and I've achieved it.

"The fans, the stadium, it was packed. It's just so annoying that the result didn't go our way. I was buzzing to be out there."

Styles started the game at left wing-back for Sunderland, spent some time in a number ten position and then moved over to the right side of midfield.

It really highlighted his versatility, but he isn’t sure that’s an especially good thing for him personally.

"I've played every position you can imagine,” he said. “I'm obviously a midfielder but I've played at left wing-back as well.

“I think managers seem to know I can play a lot of positions, it can be a hindrance, it can be a positive. I like to operate in more central areas."
