Sunderland are closing in on the signing of Benfica hotshot Luis Semedo, reports Portuguese outlet Record.

Semedo, 19, is a product of the Benfica youth academy. The attacker has worked his way through the youth tanks of the Portuguese giants and was top scorer for the side during their successful UEFA Youth League campaign in the 2021/22 campaign.

But Semedo sees his contract expire this summer and reports in Portugal are claiming that the tall striker is set to join Sunderland on a free transfer.

He could yet become the Black Cats' first signing of what looks set to be another busy summer transfer window, following on from Sunderland's impressive first season back in the Championship which saw them finish in 6th place of the table.

And the Semedo signing looks like another exciting one for the Black Cats who are continuously poaching younger talents from home and from abroad - Jobe Bellingham looks like another who could sign when the summer transfer window officially opens on June 14th.

Sunderland's recruitment...

This signing seems very similar to the signing of Jewison Bennette. Sunderland poached Bennette from South America and he looks like a very good signing for the future.

Semedo looks set to arrive with a bit more experience under his belt and he'll bolster Sunderland's depleted attacking ranks too, with Ross Stewart being the club's only recognised striker as things stand.

It'll no doubt take time for him to adapt to the English game, but this certainly looks like an exciting signing and for Semedo, a move to Sunderland will be a very exciting and prosperous opportunity.
