Sunderland have added Anthony Hayes to their coaching set-up as they look to shake things up following the departure of Michael Beale.

Hayes, who has been out of work since leaving Charlton last year, joins as first team coach, essentially filling the void left by Mike Dodds, who has been promoted to the top job until the end of the season.

Under-21s coach Graeme Murty will also step up to help with the first team until the end of the season too.

Hayes had a term in caretaker charge of Charlton in 2022, although he was only able to win once in three games – and that was against a Brighton under-21 team in the EFL Trophy.

“I’ve known Anthony for some time and we are delighted to welcome him to our coaching team,” Mike Dodds said.

“This is a position we wanted to add and following the changes made earlier this week, our requirements shifted a little as did the timeframe.

“Anthony immediately made himself available and like Graeme Murty, he will bring added value to our coaching and match preparations.

“He’s also been an Interim Head Coach before, which will not only support me but also our players as we adapt and move forward together in the coming weeks and months.”
