Sunderland needed some heroics from Anthony Patterson at QPR, and Luke O'Nien never doubted they could rely on them.

Luke O’Nien referred to Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson as ‘the postman’ following his penalty heroics at QPR, because he always delivers.

Patterson has been in fine form all season for Sunderland, and he was a key player again as his outstanding penalty save from Ilias Chair helped the Black Cats to a 3-0 win at Loftus Road.

Speaking after the game, though, O’Nien said the goalkeeper always seems to deliver for Sunderland when they need him.

“We got the goal, were solid defensively and when we needed Patta as well he delivered as always - the postman in the goal,” O’Nien said.

O’Nien was also happy to credit the Sunderland substitutes on the night after they all made their presence felt at Loftus Road.

Amad Diallo provided his usual quality and Dennis Cirkin played a crucial role in Jack Clarke’s first goal by winning the ball and starting the counter attack.

Dan Neil and Pierre Ekwah, meanwhile, combined brilliantly to create the third goal, which was also scored by Clarke.

“The subs that came on as well were different class and really impacted the game, were involved in the two goals and seeing it out,” O’Nien said. “It was just a top job all round.

“I think knowing their record - I think they had only won one in nine coming into this - so getting that first goal would be a huge advantage knowing that.

“We really enjoyed the evening, from back to front the subs that came on, it was just a top, top night.”
