Luke O'Nien on piggy-back yellow card: 'We've all established I'm an idiot!'
Luke O'Nien has addressed his brilliantly bizarre yellow card for Sunderland in the Championship draw against Bristol City.
The 28-year-old was yellow-carded after he decided to stop a Bristol City counter-attack by piggy-backing on Robins forward Alex Scott.
The video clip has gone viral on social media and drew belly laughs from the crowd at the Stadium of light, and O'Nien has responded on social media.
"Right then, we've all established I'm an idiot," he said in Twitter whilst sharing a video of the incident.
O'Nien also offered Sunderland fans the chance to win a signed shirt, adding: "Best video edit or caption wins a signed Sunderland top from the boys."
Tony Mowbray brought on O'Nien to beef up the midfield, although he says he still sees him as a defender primarily.
"In my mind, he's a defender," Mowbray said last week. "But, as I've said constantly, he's such a great guy, he's so versatile, he has huge confidence in what he can do - he's telling me now that he can play centre-forward and cause havoc and get 15 goals a season!
“So I've got no fear of putting him in midfield because I know what he gives you, I know what he brings.
“Yet in my mind he is a defender, left side or right side, I'm genuinely not sure whether he is left-footed or right-footed! I know he's right-footed, really, but watching after training working on his left foot, it's unbelievable what he can do with it.
"He's just a talent that we are delighted to have as part of our squad, and a brilliant guy who keeps the environment and the positivity going every day. Let's see, ultimately, where he finds himself as the season unfolds."
