Patrick Roberts admitted he ‘got a bit of luck’ with his matchwinning goal against Reading, but he felt Sunderland deserved it overall.

Roberts scored his third goal against the Royals this season, with him also getting two at the Select Car Leasing Stadium earlier this season. That means three-quarters of his goals this season, and half of his total for Sunderland, have come against the Berkshire club.

He took advantage of a mistake by Reading full-back Baba Rahman to score the winner with just six minutes left, but he says his focus has already turned to Tuesday’s game at QPR.

“I got a bit of luck,” Roberts told safc.com. “You know you need a bit of luck in this game.

“Once I come inside, just hit the target and hit the back of the net, that's what a lot of us have got to do more, especially [with] just Joffy up there.

“We all stuck together and got the three points which were happy and we go again.”

“I think most of my goals have been against Reading, would be nice to play them more often!

“They did their bit today but it just so happens sometimes you score against teams more than others and today was that day.

“I’m just glad I can help the team with the three points and hopefully we can do it again on Tuesday and the rest of the season.”

The game was a frustrating one for the most part, with Sunderland struggling to find a way to break down a physical and experienced Reading side who arrived on Wearside with spoiling in mind.

“They're a tough team,” Roberts said. “They came here to do a certain job. We like to play football and they kind of stopped that and had different threats for us.

“As a collective we did really well, changed the game at times, brought players on, new lads coming in doing their bit as well.

“Everyone stuck together, nice to score in the end but most important thing is three points and on to Tuesday.”
