Sunderland striker Ellis Simms appears to have avoided a lengthy after scans on his toe injury came back ‘inconclusive.’

Simms is the only senior striker option at the club right now after top scorer Ross Stewart was ruled out for around two months with a thigh problem.

He, though, hobbled out of the clash with Reading himself last week to leave Sunderland sweating over whether or not they’d have to do without the on-load Everton man for a sustain period too.

Whether the news on that is entirely positive is not yet know, although it at least wasn’t bad news either.

Asked for the latest on the Ellis Simms injury ahead of the game against Watford, head coach Tony Mowbray said: "He went into central London and had a scan.

"It was a little bit inconclusive - it's his big toe. It's really player management on that, it's about how he feels when he's out on the grass.

"That's why he's going to put his boots on and if it feels fine, he'll turn a jog into a run, and from there to a sprint, and until he does that, we'll have to see how he gets on. We're hoping he's going to be OK.

"I've just been talking to him there at breakfast, he'll have a jog about on the grass today and we'll wait and see. If the worst comes to worst and he can't make the game tomorrow, we've got a break for two weeks and I'm sure he'll be fine after that.”

Mowbray was also reluctant to commit to whether Simms will be ready to face Watford, although he definitely has a chance.

"It's touch and go [for tomorrow] as I sit here now,” he said. “It'll depend on our training session this afternoon and how he goes in that."
