Sunderland youngster to receive England call-up this summer - report
Anthony Patterson is set to be rewarded for his performances at Sunderland by being made the England number one at the Under-21s European Championships.
Patterson is actually 22, but he is still eligible due to his age when the qualifying campaign began.
According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, he is going to get his first call-up for what has been a problem position for the Three Lions’ youngsters of late.
Josef Bursik, James Trafford and Josh Griffiths are currently the three goalkeepers in the England Under-21s squad, but Patterson is playing regularly.
The tournament will be held in Romania over the summer between June 21 and July 8. England have been drawn in Group C alongside Czech Republic, Germany and Israel.
Patterson has certainly impressed since making his Sunderland breakthrough last season, and has already been linked with Premier League duo Leicester and Wolves.
Tony Mowbray won’t be wanting to lose him this summer, though, and there is little indication Sunderland will want to sell either.
“The goalkeeper... listen, he's a top goalkeeper,” Mowbray said of Patterson last month.
“I've been in football more than 40 years and this kid is a very talented boy who has an amazing temperament.
“Nothing fazes him, he's very calm about everything, he's not bouncing all over the place and losing the plot.
“He's a very calm goalie who makes great saves.”
