Tony Mowbray reveals Ross Stewart's Sunderland return date
Tony Mowbray says that Sunderland striker Ross Stewart won't be returning until late September.
It's been a year of injury hell for Stewart. The Scot managed just 13 Championship outings last season for Sunderland but he still managed to score 10 goals in that time, proving his worth in the second tier.
He made his return in the New Year but soon after that he was back on the sidelines, this time with an Achilles injury which has kept him out since.
But speaking (via The Northern Echo) on Stewart's latest situation, Black Cats boss Mowbray revealed that the 27-year-old is now set to return in late September - after the start of the 2023/24 campaign.
Mowbray said:
“I had a conversation with him (Stewart) this morning, and he said late September. Now, that’s him saying that, not the physios, but I’m sure he’s had discussions with the physios about it.
“Generally, when they’re not available to play for me, I don’t spend too much time trying to hurry them back. We focus on the players that we’ve got available. But I did see him this morning, and he suggested to me the end of September. That’s when I think he said that he hoped to be back on the grass training and fit to play. So, we’ll see.”
Right now, Mowbray's only option up top is the unproven Luis Hemir, so Stewart's eventual return will be a huge boost for the club.
Expect Sunderland to sign another striker this summer to take the pressure off Stewart and expect Mowbray to be reluctant to rush the striker back into the fold.
After such a tough year for Stewart, he'll no doubt be gunning to make his return and remind fans of how good of a player he is.
