Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray says he wants the club to sign a new striker and potentially a new midfielder, with the Black Cats having 'bids in for players'.

Sunderland kick off their 2023/24 season with a home game v Ipswich Town on Sunday.

They've had a very positive summer transfer window so far making seven new signings.

And Mowbray's side have addressed the striker position by bringing in both Luis Hemir and Eliezer Mayenda, though the latter picked up an injury in his first training session at the club.

That leaves just Hemir as Mowbray's only fit striker ahead of Sunday with Ross Stewart still sidelined for a while longer yet.

And as quoted by Sunderland Echo, Mowbray had this to say on more potential signings:

"We had a meeting yesterday and we've got bids in for players. We're pushing hard to make sure we have additions in that part of the pitch."

The Sunderland boss added:

"I think we need another attacking player in the building, and I know we're working hard to do that.

"Then potentially a midfield player, who can complement Dan Neil and Pierre Ekwah and Jobe Bellingham. We've got a little bit of work to do but we're looking forward to the season and it should be a great occasion on Sunday."

Hemir has impressed in pre-season and he looks set to lead the line for Sunderland against Ipswich, in what should prove to be a very tough opener for the Black Cats.

Ipswich are coming up from League One with plenty of optimism and on the back of a positive summer transfer window of their own, with the Tractor Boys signing names like Jack Taylor and George Hirst.

The game kicks off at 7pm on Sunday evening.
