Sunderland have been credited with an interest in Bologna striker Sydney van Hooijdonk, as per a report from The72.

Van Hooijdonk, 23, currently plays for Serie A outfit Bologna. But the Dutch striker looks like he could be on the move this summer with the former NAC Breda man well down the pecking order in Italy.

He spent last season on loan at SC Heerenveen where he netted 19 goals in all competitions - 16 of which coming in the Dutch top flight.

And now, The72 are saying that Sunderland and Championship rivals Southampton are among up to 10 English sides chasing a deal for the striker, who had links to the Championship at the start of the year.

It's also said that van Hooijdonk was valued at £10million at the start of the year but given the fact that he's fallen out of favour at Bologna, he could be available for much less this summer.

Van Hooijdonk to Sunderland

Sunderland links to strikers continue to emerge. And it's no surprise given the fact that Luis Hemir and Ross Stewart are Tony Mowbray's only real options up top, with the latter set to miss the start of next season too.

Expect to see at least one more striker arrive at the Stadium of Light this summer with van Hooijdonk joining the likes of Matija Frigan in being linked with a move to the club in the past few days.

Van Hooijdonk's record speaks for itself and if he's available for a decent price then it could be a real coup for the Black Cats.

With interest high though, signing him won't be an easy task for whoever gets a deal over the line in the end.
