Within the first 16 minutes of the World Cup final against Japan, Carli Lloyd had done what only one other person had ever done before—score a hat trick in a World Cup final. She put in two goals from inside the box in the first five minutes of the game, then added one of the cheekiest goals in World Cup history just after the 15-minute mark. She spotted Japan’s goalkeeper too far off her line, and launched a half-field shot that went over the keeper’s head, giving the U.S. a 4-0 lead.
