Outdoor Pro Sports with Fans Can Resume In Texas at 25% Capacity

The governor of the state of Texas announced changes to guidelines for pro sports’ return today. The new guidelines go into effect this Sunday, May 31.

The governor of the state of Texas announced changes to guidelines for pro sports’ return today.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced the new guidelines would go into effect this Sunday, May 31.

Outdoor events can operate at 25% of normal operating limits and need to facilitate appropriate social distancing. Indoor events can occur, but without fans in attendance. Leagues will have to submit plans and receive approval from the Department of State Health Services before they begin.

Outdoor motorsports had been allowed to resume in Texas at 25% capacity and appropriate social distancing on May 22.

An announcement by the governor’s office earlier this month initially said no fans would be able to attend live events.

The announcement comes nearly a week after the governor said the state is working toward a plan to start the college football season on time.

“If you want a prediction, my prediction is yes, we are gonna have college football beginning as scheduled ... with at least some level of fans in stands,” Abbott said Friday in an interview with KXAN-TV in Austin.

The revised rule does not address college or high school athletics.
