When Maria Sharapova went on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, my first thought was that the entire comedy gag was how ridiculously towering the 6-foot-1 Maria Sharapova (with four-inch heels on, to boot) looked next to Fallon and the ping pong table. But as it turns out, it was all part of her pre-U.S. Open, 'Sugarpova' media blitz. She gave Jimmy the rundown on her Olympic experience, the French Open win, and of course, her new candy line.
As part of said blitz, she also played "Root Beer Pong" -- a favorite pastime at any proper 8-year-old's birthday party -- with Fallon. If only Maria played as quickly between tennis points as she does between beer pong points.
Below are two prime moments from the interview, which you can watch here and here.
• Why she took a picture with a gorilla at the Olympic Village: "When I saw all these statues around and the most popular one was the Olympic Rings. So all the athletes were there and there's like a huge line. I'm like 'I'm not wasting my time,' I see this gorilla, I'm going to take a picture, this is proof I was there. You see the buildings in the background? That's where the athletes were staying. That's all you need." You're such an independent spirit, Maria.
