MELBOURNE, Australia -- Day 1 of the Australian Open is in the books. Aside from No. 6 seed Petra Kvitova's loss, it was business as usual for the top players, led by Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic, who cruised in straight sets.

Two veteran fan favorites, Venus Williams and Kimiko Date-Krumm, went down swinging in three-set battles, while two volatile entertainers, Ernests Gulbis and Jerzy Janowicz, had to fight themselves and their game opponents to advance to the second round. The action, combined with some hot but manageable temperatures, made for the perfect way to ease into the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.
