Photos: Australian Open fashion misses
MELBOURNE, Australia -- At this year's Australian Open, players either look great, or they make you stop in your tracks to wonder how anyone could possibly think vertical stripes were a good idea. In a tournament in which "extreme" seems to be a word that's been coming up a lot, we shouldn't be surprised.
Here are my fashion misses from the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. (Click here for the fashion hits.)
Novak Djokovic: What happened to those great Uniqlo kits that were simple, clean and colorful? As one reader said, he looks like he's about to board the Starship Enterprise. (Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)
Victoria Azarenka: Nike went with a set of pink kits and blue kits for the Australian Open, and the pink ladies lost. (Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)
Tomas Berdych: I'm officially convinced that H&M is doing this on purpose. There hasn't been one outfit it's put together for Berdych that didn't make you question its sanity. This time, it turned him into an Argentine club soccer player. (Andrew Brownbill/AP)
Svetlana Kuznetsova: Mercifully, Kuznetsova lost in the first round, so no one has to know that Qiaodan did this. (Matt King/Getty Images)
Bethanie Mattek-Sands: I can be charmed by Mattek-Sands' penchant for thinking outside of the box, but not this time. All-black knee-high socks in this Australian heat? It's an oppressive look. (Scott Barbour/Getty Images)
Serena Williams: "On Wednesdays we wear pink!" I don't know, are you guys feeling it? I'm not feeling it. Oh, and stop with the blazers. I beseech you, Nike. (Michael Dodge/Getty Images, Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)
Ryan Harrison: Love the bright shoes and the beachy shorts, but the gray shirt is straight out of a gym rat's closet. (Michael Dodge/Getty Images)
Elina Svitolina: It's not as bad as Ellesse's trademark fail from the U.S. Open a few years back, but it's still too much pattern. (Matt King/Getty Images)
Kei Nishikori: Either Uniqlo changed the cut of its gear or Nishikori decided to go up a size this year. Either way, it's an ill-fitting look. (Essi Lim/Action Plus/Icon SMI)
Eugenie Bouchard:
