Roger Federer, Stanislas Wawrinka advance to Indian Wells doubles semis

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka won't be meeting in singles at the BNP Paribas Open, but they're not finished playing doubles yet.

The Swiss duo defeated reigning U.S. Open champions Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-7 (6), 10-4 on Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals. Federer and Wawrinka, who teamed up to make the final here in 2011, will face No. 2 Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares next. In the other semifinal, No. 1 Bob and Mike Bryan will meet John Isner and Sam Querrey, an unseeded American team that beat No. 3 Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo.

Federer and Wawrinka both played singles matches on Wednesday, too, and victories for each would have meant an all-Swiss clash in the quarterfinals. Federer held up his end with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Tommy Haas, but Wawrinka lost to Kevin Anderson 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-1 for his first defeat of the season.

Anderson, ranked a career-high 18th, made the final in his previous two tournaments, both on outdoor hard courts, his best surface. In their only other match, Federer defeated Anderson 6-4, 6-4 on an indoor hard court at the Paris Masters last October.
