Maria Sharapova towers over Floyd Mayweather at the ESPYs
Leave it to Maria Sharapova to create the viral moment of the night at ESPN's ESPY Awards. Sharapova was paired with boxer Floyd Mayweather to present the award for Best Game and the 6 foot 2 inch Russian completely dwarfed the 5 foot 8 boxer, leading to this solid visual gag:
The two were introduced by a British-accented Drake who introduced Sharapova with "And from tennis, or whatever, Maria Sharapova," leaving Sharapova to quip "Wow. Where was my introduction?" And with that, Drake's beef with tennis continues.
Sharapova beat out Serena Williams, Li Na and Agnieszka Radwanska for the Best Female Tennis Player Award and was presented her trophy on the red carpet before the ceremony. Sharapova as best female tennis player? That's a reasonable assessment if the ESPY voters are only taking into account the 2014 season -- she is No. 1 in the Road to Singapore rankings -- but not if they're supposed to consider the last 12 months. Currently ranked No. 6, Sharapova didn't play the last three months of the 2013 season. Then again, this isn't a real award so to each their own.
Sharapova wasn't the only tennis player in attendance. Grigor Dimitrov also scored an invite -- gee I wonder how! -- and Sloane Stephens attended the event with her brother.
