Maria Sharapova announced she would not compete in U.S. Open.
Maria Sharapova will not compete in the U.S. Open, she announced Sunday.
The tournament will begin Monday.
Sharapova has been battling a right leg injury. Here's Sharapova's announcement, which she made on Facebook:
“Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in this years US Open. I have done everything possible to be ready but it was just not enough time. To all my amazing fans, I will be back in the Asian swing in a few weeks and look forward to finishing the year healthy and strong.”
The U.S. Open will run until Sept. 13, with Serena Williams looking for a calendar Grand Slam on the women's side. Sharapova would have been the third seed.
