Down 4–0 in the third set to Karin Knapp, Victoria Azarenka retired from her first-round match at the French Open due to injury.
After losing the first set 6–3, Azarenka tweaked her right knee midway through the second, limped to her chair and took a long injury timeout before returning to the match. She then won all three of her break points in the set to force a tiebreak, and forced a third set, 8–6. Her knee continued to bother her throughout.
