Juan Martin del Potro headlines U.S. Open wild cards
Olympic silver medalist Juan Martin del Potro headlines the list of the men and women that have been selected as wild cards for the 2016 U.S. Open.
Del Potro is coming off a surprise performance in Rio, as the Argentinean knocked off Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal on his way to winning a silver medal.
He won the U.S. Open in 2009 as a 20-year-old, but has undergone three surgeries on his left wrist. He is currently ranked No. 141.
The women are led by American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who teamed up with Jack Sock to win the gold medal in mixed doubles. Mattek-Sand is one of the best doubles players in the world, winning at the Australian and French Opens in 2015, and has ranked as high as No. 30 in singles.
A pair of Division I national champions, Danielle Collins and Mackenzie McDonald, have also been selected.
The main draw of the U.S. Open runs from Aug. 29-Sept. 11. The qualifying tournament begins on Aug. 23.
