Tomas Berdych announced that he will not be playing in the 2016 U.S. Open after being diagnosed with appendicitis while playing in the current Western and Southern Open tournament in Cincinnati.

The Czech tennis star told fans that he would be headed back to Europe for additional testing and care, forcing him to miss the final major of the season.

Berdych fell in the round of 16 to Marin Cilic in tournament formerly known as the Cincinnati Masters before announcing the illness.

The world No. 8 lost to Richard Gasquet in the Round of 16 at the 2015 Open. Berdych had his career best showing at the major in 2012 when he made it to the semifinals by upsetting Roger Federer.
