Mary Cain explains her motivation to call out Nike, Alberto Salaz

Former high school track phenom Mary Cain details the alleged mistreatment under former coach Alberto Salazar as a Nike athlete.

Former high school track phenom Mary Cain detailed her alleged mistreatment under former coach Alberto Salazar as a member of Nike's Oregon Project. In an op-ed for The New York Times, Cain says she broke five bones and went three years without getting her period under Salazar’s extreme training methods. Cain opened up about her inspiration to come forward and the struggles she still faces, telling SI’s Amy Campbell that it was hard for her to open up to friends and family because she “thought this story was a story of failure and not a story of mistreatment.” Cain also responded to Nike's handling of her allegations: “I’m a 23-year-old woman and I don’t understand why a company and past coaches want to bring my parents into this.”
