Deion Sanders was one of several veteran free agents the 49ers signed to shore up their defense and the move paid off handsomely as San Francisco went to the NFC Championship game for the third consecutive year and won this time.

Jerry Rice tied his own record for touchdown receptions in a Super Bowl by catching three, including a 44-yarder on the 49ers opening drive. He finished the day with 149 receiving yards on 10 receptions.

Steve Young clearly stepped out of Joe Montana's shadow by throwing a record six touchdown passes in San Francisco's 49-26 victory over San Diego. Young joined Montana, Terry Bradshaw, Emmitt Smith and Bart Starr as the only players to win the league MVP award and Super Bowl MVP in the same season.
