Super Bowl Champions: 1972 Dolphins

Don Shula's Dolphins defeated the Redskins 14-7 to become the first and only team to put together a perfect, undefeated season.

Bob Griese suffered a fractured leg and dislocated ankle in Week 5 and was replaced by Earl Morrall, but Griese got the start in the Super Bowl because coach Don Shula felt more comfortable with Morrall coming off the bench if needed. Griese threw a 28-yard TD pass to Howard Twilley in the lowest scoring Super Bowl in history.

Larry Csonka carried the ball 15 times for 112 yards in the championship game, and might have been named MVP if not for safety Jake Scott's two interceptions, one in the end zone.

With the likes of Bob Heinz (72), Nick Buoniconti (85), Dough Swift (59) and Manny Fernandez (75), the Dolphins held the Redskins' offense scoreless in Super Bowl VII. Washington got its only points when Miami kicker Garo Yepremian picked up the ball after a field goal attempt was blocked and tossed up a fumble that Roy Jefferson returned for a TD.

When Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick weren't working their magic on offense, running back Mercury Morris was working his. Morris and Csonka became the first teammates in league history to both rush for 1,000 yards in the same season.
