Chicago White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana has been chosen to play in the All-Star game as a replacement for Indians pitcher Danny Salazar, who is dealing with elbow discomfort, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The All-Star appearance will be the first for Quintana, who debuted for the White Sox in 2012.
The 27-year-old found out that he would be headed to San Diego before Sunday’s game against the Braves, as the team surprised him with his All-Star jersey on the field.
Quintana said that making the All-Star team was one of his goals this season, and was disappointed when he wasn’t initially picked.
“It’s a goal for me each year,” he said Wednesday. “If I am an All-Star that would be good for any player, but now I will focus on the team. Maybe next year.”
Quintana is 7–8 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 117 2/3 innings this season.
