After you narrowly survive the crash of the Nautilus and escape the Mind Flayer’s grasp you’ll be free to wander around the coast where you crashed. While you should be rushing to look for a cure to your unfortunate condition, it’s worth having a wander, as you can find reliable allies like Astarion.

He’s tucked away in a corner of this big opening area, so we’ll tell you how to recruit Astarion so you can have a lovable Rogue in your party.

He’s not the only ally you can find in the early game, so check out how to recruit Shadowheart, Gale, and Scratch if you want to fill out your ranks.

How to recruit Astarion – Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 Astarion's location

From the beach, you should head west, through the wreckage of the Nautilus, and out the other side. Along the treeline there you should spot a pod that has fallen a little distance from the ship, go up and inspect it.

Do so and you’ll secretly roll a Perception check, and passing it will reveal Astarion brandishing a knife behind you. Thankfully, talking him down is easy and you’ll get the option to recruit him into your party almost immediately.

Missing him here isn’t the end of the world, as he will appear elsewhere later in the game, but this is the earliest and easiest place to get him on your side.
