There are many allies you can recruit on your adventure in Baldur’s Gate 3, but play your cards right and you can come away with a full party before you’ve even left the first area. One such party member is the Wizard Gale, who was also a victim aboard the Nautilus before it crashed.

His powerful spells make him a valuable ally, so we’ll tell you how to recruit Gale in the game’s opening area.

He’s not the only ally you can find in the early game, so check out how to recruit Shadowheart, Astarion, and Wyll if you want to fill out your ranks.

Gale is very close to the wreck of the Nautilus, on the path that runs along its northern edge. There you’ll see a purple portal with an arm sticking out of it and asking for help.

Be careful here, as if you mess this up you’ll end up ripping Gale’s arm off as he disappears into the portal. However, do it right and you’ll pull him out of the portal. There he’ll greet you and you’ll have the option to recruit him to your party.

Like the other characters in this opening area, you will see them again if you miss them or deny recruiting them here, however, this is by far the easiest place to pick them up.
