The best Grass Pokemon should capture the beauty of nature, while still having a sting in the tail

The 10 best Grass Pokemon of all time /

There’s plenty of beauty in nature, and Grass Pokémon should exemplify that beauty in all its forms. From the colorful flowers to the verdant fields and all in between, Grass-types should be full of the very essence of life that keeps our planet turning. That said, nature has a keen sting too, and when in the heat of battle, that harsher side should be unleashed.

We’ve searched from the top of the highest tree to the bottom of the deepest valley to find the best Grass Pokémon.

Wo-Chien

Wo-Chien

Starting off with one of the new Generation 9 Pokémon, Wo-Chien is one of Scarlet & Violet’s Treasures of Ruin. This legendary Pokémon is quite a terrifying force. According to the Pokédex it formed around wooden tablets on which someone had written the deeds of an evil king, and the sheer grudge that person held gave life to a Pokémon.

Admit it, you didn’t expect this leaf-snail to have such cool lore, did you?

Exeggutor

Exeggutor

Whether long-necked or short, Exeggutor is a delightful Pokémon to behold. The seeds from Exeggcute suddenly seem much happier now they’ve grown into trees, and their derpy smile makes me want to smile along with them. If that wasn’t enough, it’s one of the stronger Grass-types from Gen 1, that can still pack a punch today.

Meowscarada

Shiny Meowscarada

While it’s disappointing that the adorable Sprigatito didn’t stay on all-fours, you shouldn’t turn your nose up at what we got instead. Meowscarada is an elegant-looking Pokémon that has just the right amount of accentuating features to nail the theme without making it weird (looking at you, Inteleon). The magician theming is great, especially when it pulls off its signature move, Flower Trick.

Shaymin

Shaymin from Pokémon.
The Pokémon Company / Nintendo

What's better than a cute little flower hedgehog? A flower hedgehog that can transform into a sky range that's what. In its land form, Shaymin is everything you want from a small Mythical 'mon, but its sky form has a brash confidence about it that makes it stand out.

Bulbasaur

The Pokemon Company International

Long ago, those who chose Bulbasaur from the original starter trio were mocked, but in this modern age, we know better. We know of the true greatness Bulbasaur holds, and we're proud of our strong and confident friend whose eyes light up with joy and whose smile could cheer anyone up.

Shiftry

Shiftry

As with Greninja in the best Water Pokémon list, it’s a simple fact of life that ninjas are cool. While Shiftry’s design isn’t quite as on-the-nose as Greninja, it’s still got everything it needs to look the part. The short legs make it light on its feet, its razor-sharp leaves can slice through all sorts of tough foes, and the white fur makes it look like it’s wearing a mask.

Snivy

Look at this small smug snake. Hug it. It won’t hug you back though, because it’s too cool for that. Snivy is better than you, and it knows it.

Celebi

Celebi

Celebi is the perfect mythical Pokémon. Mew may have come first, but Celebi takes the pixie idea and adds lots of extra layers – appropriate for its onion-like appearance. The shape of its head makes it look windswept and mystical, which is complemented by the smaller body that flies along behind it. It’s a cute character that also has cool time-travel abilities, making it an awe-inspiring creature.

Roserade

Roserade

A slightly more overlooked Pokémon, Roserade has all the tools to stand among the coolest Grass-types. Its short stature and strong stance makes it the kind of Pokémon that you don’t want to underestimate, especially as those colorful bouquets it holds actually conceal vines tipped with poisonous thorns.

Decidueye

Decidueye

Alolan Decidueye was already one of the best starter Pokémon, with its simple owl-like design that gives way to ghostly abilities and archery mastery. Then Pokémon Legends: Arceus came along and gave it a second top-tier form. Hisuian Decidueye goes a different direction down the fantasy class tree, being a viscous martial artist instead. It has the stand of a proud warrior and claws that can rip your eyes out. If you don’t like it, try saying that to its face.
