Magic classes are vital for any Baldur’s Gate 3 party to come away victorious. The impact of the Warriors and Rangers can’t be understated but without the mystical forces of nature, destruction, and even the hells themselves, taking out large groups of tough enemies would be near enough impossible.

That’s why it’s important that every magic user, be they Sorcerer, Wizard, Warlock, or one of the many other classes that can learn spells, they need to have the right spells prepared. Picking a set of spells that work well together can lead to some unbelievable strategies, so we’ll explain how to prepare spells before you get into battle.

If you want you or any of your party to become a magic user, then you’ll need to know how to change your class in Baldur’s Gate 3, and you should check out our Baldur’s Gate 3 class tier list too.

You can prepare spells both in the level-up screen and in your inventory.

Whenever you level up you can scroll through the tabs on the left to prepare spells. Here you’ll be shown the full list of spells you have access to, and it will be your job to select the few that you want to use in combat. Naturally, you’ll start off with a limited number of spells, but this will grow as you progress.

You can also prepare spells in your inventory any time you’re not in combat. To do that, scroll through to the character you want to customize, open the inventory, and navigate to the “spells” tab at the top. You’ll be able to select and deselect active spells just like in the level-up screen.
