Baldur’s Gate 3 is full of small puzzles to solve, and one such puzzle is a Gilded Chest locked with Selûne’s Seal that you will find in Owlbear Cave during BG3’s Act 1.

When you go southwest after Emerald Grove, you may get inside a cave where you will find a chest that deals damage upon contact. So, you might be wondering how are you supposed to remove its magic seal? Here’s a quick walkthrough of how to open Selûne’s Gilded Chest in Owlbear Nest.

If you’re done at Druid Grove, you’ve probably headed southwest and found the cave already. The exact map coordinates of the cave mouth are X: 82, Y: 450. Once inside Owlbear Nest, take the left path and use the Cragged Rock to descend. Taking the right path will get you to the Owlbear itself, with its cub and unhatched egg.

In this cavern, there is a large statue of Selûne, a blue Gilded Chest, and a bunch of other items next to it. You can collect the items but don’t try to open the chest as it is locked with Selûne’s Seal and will blast upon contact, dealing Radiant damage to your party. The sealed chest is imbued with all sorts of resistances, so any attack will be useless and even dangerous for your party.

The “key” to opening the chest lies inconspicuously in that very same cavern, right behind the Moonmaiden’s statue.

As we just mentioned, the Gilded Chest is quite tough, and it's magical seal gives it resistence to pretty much any type of attack. So, instead of attacking the chest, trying to open it the regular way, or lockpicking it, you need to leave it for now and jump over the gap to go behind Selûne’s statue.

This will trigger an automatic Perception check, and, if that’s successful, you will notice a piece of paper lying right behind the statue. If the check fails, you can jump back and jump across the gap again to reroll it. You can use Guidance or another way of adding a bonus to your ability checks if you're failing consistently.

Now that you know the piece of paper is a Selûnite Prayer Sheet, interact with it to read it. This will trigger a Religion check. If successful, you will get more information about the prayer, and you’ll realize you have to recite it in front of the chest.

If the religion check fails the first time, you should not worry, just pick up the sheet and jump back across the gap to get next to the Gilded Chest. Then open your inventory and select Read on the Selûnite Prayer Sheet. If you do this with Shadowheart, nothing will happen, so make sure you read it with any other character from your party.

Reading the prayer in front of the chest will trigger another Religion check and, if that’s successful, will dispel Selûne’s Seal. The Gilded Chest has now lost its magic glow and will open with no problem.

The Gilded Chest contains a Selunite Rite scroll, describing the initiation rituals of Selûne worshippers, a Silver Necklace, a Bloodstone, a mysterious Idol of Selûne silver statue, and a Moondrop Pendant.

Bloodstones restore HP and grant buffs for your characters when consumed. The Moondrop Pendant is an amulet that protects one of your characters from opportunity attacks when they are low on health, i.e. below 50%. We are yet to discover any use for the Idol of Selûne and the Selûnite Rite scroll, but this is BG3, so there surely is more than one way to use them.
