As you progress through the Mind Flayer colony in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll eventually find a Slack Skinned Head that sits atop a podium. There is normally a puzzle associated with this where you insert different minds to change the head’s personality, but many players are having trouble getting even this far.

For many, a bug occurs where attempting to speak with the head locks up the game, leaving them unable to progress. We’ll explain how to fix the Slack Skinned Head bug.

Slack Skinned Head bug fix – BG3

Larian Launcher
Larian Studios

This is a bug that only occurs when running the game on Vulkan, so to fix this bug, you need to run the game in DirectX 11.

You can do this on the game’s launcher. Below the “play” button, simply tick the DirectX 11 option to run the game in this mode. If you want to know more about the differences between the two, we have a full guide on DirectX 11 vs Vulkan.

If you prefer playing with Vulkan then don’t worry, as once you’re past the conversation with the Slack Skinned Head, you can switch back to playing in that mode.
