Update 4.0 of Genshin Impact is launching very soon, bringing with it a trio of brand-new playable Genshin Impact characters. Lyney will be the first 5-Star from Fontaine to become available, with Lynette and Freminet being this version’s fresh 4-Star characters. In addition, you can expect the return of several previously released units.

The list of upcoming Genshin Impact characters is a long one thanks to the recently published Overture Teaser, which gave us a first glimpse of many of the faces we’ll see throughout our travels in Fontaine. In addition to the new region and characters, update 4.0 will have a host of changes and quality-of-life improvements in store.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Genshin Impact 4.0 character banners.

Genshin Impact 4.0 banners: Phase 1

Starting on August 16, 2023, with update 4.0’s release, you’ll be able to call upon the following characters:

  • Banner #1: Lyney (5-Star character, bow, Pyro), Lynette (4-Star character, sword, Anemo), Bennett (4-Star character, sword, Pyro), and Barbara (4-Star character, catalyst, Hydro).
  • Banner #2: Yelan (5-Star character, bow, Hydro), Lynette (4-Star character, sword, Anemo), Bennett (4-Star character, sword, Pyro), and Barbara (4-Star character, catalyst, Hydro).

Lyney

HoYoverse

Lyney is a celebrated magician of the Court of Fontaine. His special Charged Attack can create a distraction that consumes part of his HP and explodes when it’s destroyed. He’d probably fit right in with Yoimiya, since his Elemental Skill and Elemental Burst cause some fireworks as well.

Yelan

Artwork of a blue-haired young woman.
HoYoverse

Yelan has been one of the most celebrated additions to the roster ever since she was released, being a superb off-field damage dealer of the Hydro variety – she’s essentially a female Xingqiu on steroids and has that irresistible femme fatale aura going for her.

Lynette

HoYoverse

Lynette is a quick swashbuckler, consuming and regenerating her own HP as she attacks. Just like Lyney, she uses stage props to gain an advantage in battle, using her Anemo abilities to absorb other elements and enhance her damage.

Bennett

HoYoverse

Bennett is the premium Pyro support character in the game. He's able to heal, provide consistent off-field Pyro application, and boosts the damage of the Main DPS. This lad's the full package.

Barbara

Artwork of a blonde girl with pigtails.
HoYoverse

Barbara is a very basic healer with off-field Hydro application, which comes with the downside of also applying Hydro on your own character. However, she can shine with the right team and is a great additional to some Dendro-focused teams.

Genshin Impact 4.0 banners: Phase 2

After a duration of three weeks, the banners will change at the halfway point of the game version on September 5, 2023. That’ll make the following characters available:

  • Banner #3: Tartaglia (5-Star character, bow, Hydro), Freminet (4-Star character, claymore, Cryo), Noelle (4-Star character, claymore, Geo), and Sayu (4-Star character, claymore, Anemo).
  • Banner #4: Zhongli (5-Star character, polearm, Geo), Freminet (4-Star character, claymore, Cryo), Noelle (4-Star character, claymore, Geo), and Sayu (4-Star character, claymore, Anemo).

Tartaglia

Tartaglia is a very powerful and consistent damage dealer that’s been around for ages, delivering consistent Hydro damage that can be used for strong elemental reactions, given the right team.

Zhongli

Zhongli is one of those powerful characters everyone would love to have on their roster: The CEO of Geo provides some of the strongest shielding in the game, making you forget that you even need to have HP on your characters.

Freminet

HoYoverse

Freminet has an interesting mechanic that changes the nature of his Elemental Skill based on the Pressure level of the Pers Timer. He looks to be quite a technical character to play. Users will probably find his exploration passive useful as well, which reduces the Stamina consumed while being underwater – there’s bound to be a lot of that in Fontaine.

Noelle

HoYoverse

Noelle provides shielding and Geo damage and can be a very useful character to have around for farming ores or defeating the Geo Hypostasis on the search for materials.

Sayu

HoYoverse

Sayu is a great character to have around for cleaning up leaves (as you sometimes have to do on quests), thanks to her rolling ability. Otherwise she’s not too often used, though players with some creative imagination can definitely come up with fun compositions around her.

Three weeks afterwards, update 4.1 with a whole new quartet of banners will become available.
