Genshin Impact Layla build and materials guide

Wake up, sleepyhead, you have a Layla to build

The best Genshin Impact Layla build nets you one of the strongest shields in the entire game on top of very consistent Cryo application. She may be a sleepy Akademiya student, but Layla is a very productive member of your team if you build her right.

Layla’s Elemental Skill, Nights of Formal Focus, deals Cryo damage in an area around her while creating a shield, the strength of which is based on her maximum HP. Activating this ability does apply Cryo to Layla herself for a short time, so be careful with that. Every 1.5 seconds or when the active character uses an Elemental Skill, Night Stars are added to the shield until four exist, after which they are fired as Shooting Stars that deal Cryo damage.

Her Elemental Burst, Dream of the Star-Stream Shaker, creates a sphere that fires a constant barrage of Cryo attacks in the area around it. For every enemy hit by the missiles one Night Star is created, so there is a lot of synergy with Layla’s Elemental Skill here.

Layla's ability to sleep anywhere anytime is quite useful in combat, believe it or not / HoYoverse

Though you really want all of Layla’s Constellations to get the most out of her abilities, boosting the right stats will already give you an incredibly useful member for many of your teams, as the cost of her Elemental Burst is quite low, allowing for a very high uptime of all of her skills.

Best Layla weapons – Genshin Impact

Since Layla’s primary purpose in your team is to provide it with a shield, raising her maximum HP is your highest priority. The Key of Khaj-Nisut does exactly that and provides a useful buff to the party’s Elemental Mastery as well, which might be useful in a reaction-oriented team.

Here are the best weapons for Layla in Genshin Impact:

  • Key of Khaj-Nisut (5-star sword)
  • Freedom-Sworn (5-star sword)
  • Favonius Sword (4-star sword)

Best Layla artifacts – Genshin Impact

You probably already guessed it: We want more HP through our artifact set for Layla. Tenacity of the Millelith provides a 20% boost to maximum HP at two worn pieces, so it’s a clear choice. You should, in fact, aim for the full set, since the bonus Attack and shield strength from the set bonus offers a lot of additional value for the entire team, helping Layla carry her weight.

You should get the following stat distribution on Layla’s artifact set:

  • Flower: HP (main stat), HP%, Elemental Mastery, Energy Recharge, Critical Hit Rate/Critical Hit Damage (secondary stats)
  • Plume: Attack (main stat), HP%, Elemental Mastery, Energy Recharge, Critical Hit Rate/Critical Hit Damage (secondary stats)
  • Sands: HP% (main stat), HP, Elemental Mastery, Energy Recharge, Critical Hit Rate/Critical Hit Damage (secondary stats)
  • Goblet: HP% (main stat), HP, Elemental Mastery, Energy Recharge, Critical Hit Rate/Critical Hit Damage (secondary stats)
  • Circlet: HP% (main stat), HP, Elemental Mastery, Energy Recharge, Critical Hit Rate/Critical Hit Damage (secondary stats)

Best Layla teams – Genshin Impact

Layla is a very versatile Cryo support character, who can bring something to the table in pretty much any team composition.

This classic Freeze core with Kamisato Ayaka, Shenhe, and Sangonomiya Kokomi finds a perfect addition with Layla – while Ayaka and Shenhe already create the Cryo Resonance, Layla’s very consistent Cryo application in combination with Kokomi’s equally consistent application of Hydro is lessening the burden on the other two characters, who can instead concentrate on applying debuffs and dealing damage.

  • Role: Main DPS
Ayaka is the best choice for Freeze compositions and has a lot more time to deal damage when Layla is around to supply consistent Cryo application.

  • Role: Sub DPS
Shenhe is fantastic at boosting the damage output of a team, making her a great Sub DPS in many Cryo and physical compositions.

  • Role: Support
Kokomi floods any battlefield she's stepping on, so she's a perfect Freeze team member.

  • Role: Main DPS
Ganyu can be used in Melt and Freeze teams and always benefits from someone like Layla, who can provide shields and Cryo Resonance.

  • Role: Sub DPS
Though not a healer like Kokomi, Mona helps keeping the team safe with her taunt ability and is a pretty consistent Hydro provider.

Genshin Impact Eula artwork.
Eula / HoYoverse

  • Role: Main DPS
No other character dishes out physical damage like Eula.

Hu Tao / HoYoverse

  • Role: Main DPS
Hu Tao benefits a lot from shields as her damage output goes up when she's on low HP, which obviously makes her more vulnerable to being knocked out.

Healing isn’t much of an issue with Kokomi around, but shields are always nice to have and Layla’s artifact set bonus provides additional value for Ayaka. You could play this composition with the likes of Ganyu and Mona as well, so you’re quite flexible.

  • Eula (Main DPS), Shenhe (Sub DPS), Layla (Support), Shinobu (Support)

Layla can be used in physical damage teams as well. Her Cryo application helps create the Superconduct reaction, which weakens physical resistance on enemies, thus increasing the amount of damage Eula can dish out.

  • Hu Tao (Main DPS), Yelan (Sub DPS), Xingqiu (Sub DPS), Layla (Support)

It’s pretty much the same deal with a Melt crew: Yelan, Xingqiu, and Layla freeze enemies, after which Hu Tao triggers powerful Melt reactions. Shielders are a great addition to any Hu Tao team, since she’ll often have low HP to maximize her damage.

Layla ascension materials – Genshin Impact

You’ll want to quickly raise Layla’s level when you finally get her, which means that you’ll need to farm her ascension materials. You’ll also require some material to upgrade her talents.

Here’s what you need to get Layla to level 90:

  • Shivada Jade Sliver x1
  • Shivada Jade Fragment x9
  • Shivada Jade Chunk x9
  • Shivada Jade Gemstone x6
  • Divining Scroll x18
  • Sealed Scroll x30
  • Forbidden Curse Scroll x36

  • Perpetual Caliber x46
  • Mora x2,092,530

Shivada Jade is available from any Cryo-affiliated boss on the world map, such as the Cryo Regisvine or the Cryo Hypostasis. Scrolls are very common loot from Samachurls, the priest-like Hilichurls with staffs, so you shouldn’t have any problems with acquiring them. Nilopala Lotuses are found in bodies of water on the territory of Sumeru. Perpetual Calibers are a boss drop from the Aeonblight Drake in Sumeru. The best way to earn more Mora is to farm golden Ley Line Blossoms.

Here’s what you need to upgrade all of Layla’s talents to their maximum level:

  • Divining Scroll x18
  • Sealed Scroll x66
  • Forbidden Curse Scroll x93
  • Teachings of Ingenuity x9
  • Guide to Ingenuity x63
  • Philosophies of Ingenuity x114

  • Crown of Insight x3
  • Mora x4,957,500

Aside from additional Scrolls and Mora you’ll need to visit the Steeple of Ignorance Domain in Sumeru on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday to farm Books of Ingenuity. Mirrors of Mushin are a boss material dropped by Scaramouche in Sumeru City. Crowns of Insight are a rare item gained from time-limited events or regional reward mechanics like the Tree of Dreams in Sumeru or the Grand Narukami Shrine.
