The best Genshin Impact Layla build nets you one of the strongest shields in the entire game on top of very consistent Cryo application. She may be a sleepy Akademiya student, but Layla is a very productive member of your team if you build her right.

Layla’s Elemental Skill, Nights of Formal Focus, deals Cryo damage in an area around her while creating a shield, the strength of which is based on her maximum HP. Activating this ability does apply Cryo to Layla herself for a short time, so be careful with that. Every 1.5 seconds or when the active character uses an Elemental Skill, Night Stars are added to the shield until four exist, after which they are fired as Shooting Stars that deal Cryo damage.

Her Elemental Burst, Dream of the Star-Stream Shaker, creates a sphere that fires a constant barrage of Cryo attacks in the area around it. For every enemy hit by the missiles one Night Star is created, so there is a lot of synergy with Layla’s Elemental Skill here.

Since Layla’s primary purpose in your team is to provide it with a shield, raising her maximum HP is your highest priority. The Key of Khaj-Nisut does exactly that and provides a useful buff to the party’s Elemental Mastery as well, which might be useful in a reaction-oriented team.

Best Layla artifacts – Genshin Impact

You probably already guessed it: We want more HP through our artifact set for Layla. Tenacity of the Millelith provides a 20% boost to maximum HP at two worn pieces, so it’s a clear choice. You should, in fact, aim for the full set, since the bonus Attack and shield strength from the set bonus offers a lot of additional value for the entire team, helping Layla carry her weight.

Best Layla teams – Genshin Impact

Layla is a very versatile Cryo support character, who can bring something to the table in pretty much any team composition.

• Ayaka (Main DPS), Shenhe (Sub DPS), Layla (Support), Kokomi (Support)

This classic Freeze core with Kamisato Ayaka, Shenhe, and Sangonomiya Kokomi finds a perfect addition with Layla – while Ayaka and Shenhe already create the Cryo Resonance, Layla’s very consistent Cryo application in combination with Kokomi’s equally consistent application of Hydro is lessening the burden on the other two characters, who can instead concentrate on applying debuffs and dealing damage.

Kamisato Ayaka / HoYoverse

• Role: Main DPS

Ayaka is the best choice for Freeze compositions and has a lot more time to deal damage when Layla is around to supply consistent Cryo application.

Shenhe is fantastic at boosting the damage output of a team, making her a great Sub DPS in many Cryo and physical compositions.

Healing isn’t much of an issue with Kokomi around, but shields are always nice to have and Layla’s artifact set bonus provides additional value for Ayaka. You could play this composition with the likes of Ganyu and Mona as well, so you’re quite flexible.

Layla can be used in physical damage teams as well. Her Cryo application helps create the Superconduct reaction, which weakens physical resistance on enemies, thus increasing the amount of damage Eula can dish out.

• Hu Tao (Main DPS), Yelan (Sub DPS), Xingqiu (Sub DPS), Layla (Support)

It’s pretty much the same deal with a Melt crew: Yelan, Xingqiu, and Layla freeze enemies, after which Hu Tao triggers powerful Melt reactions. Shielders are a great addition to any Hu Tao team, since she’ll often have low HP to maximize her damage.

You’ll want to quickly raise Layla’s level when you finally get her, which means that you’ll need to farm her ascension materials. You’ll also require some material to upgrade her talents.

Scrolls are very common loot from Samachurls, the priest-like Hilichurls with staffs, so you shouldn’t have any problems with acquiring them. Nilopala Lotuses are found in bodies of water on the territory of Sumeru. Perpetual Calibers are a boss drop from the Aeonblight Drake in Sumeru. The best way to earn more Mora is to farm golden Ley Line Blossoms.

Aside from additional Scrolls and Mora you’ll need to visit the Steeple of Ignorance Domain in Sumeru on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday to farm Books of Ingenuity. Mirrors of Mushin are a boss material dropped by Scaramouche in Sumeru City. Crowns of Insight are a rare item gained from time-limited events or regional reward mechanics like the Tree of Dreams in Sumeru or the Grand Narukami Shrine.
