Hogwarts Legacy is finally here and, as with most open-world games, it's massive. But how long does it take to finish Hogwarts Legacy?

For those who wish to spend entire days in Hogwarts, it’s going to be a blessing, but for players with limited time, the number of hours they’re about to face might be a bit scary.

Below we’ll break down how long it takes to beat Hogwarts Legacy, how many story missions are included, and what can you do once you complete the main story.

Make sure to read through our other Hogwarts Legacy guides for everything you need to know about the game, including puzzle solutions, item locations, and more.

How long is Hogwarts Legacy?

The game has a main quest which, together with a fair number of side missions, took us about 21 hours. This figure is based on the in-game clock, which most likely pauses while you're in the menu (whether it’s to swap between spell sets or to consult equipment and inventory), which explains why our own clock instead stopped at around 27 hours.

You’ll get to play across 44 story missions, but some of these will only be available by talking to certain characters during the story, as well as others that can be triggered after a few more hours in the game, so take this as an estimate of the volume of base content, rather than an exact figure.

Clearly, counting all the secondary content, you’re likely reaching 50 hours or so, since the side activities and quests are not lacking at all, and are largely a pleasure to explore.

Hogwarts Legacy endgame

At the end of the main story, Hogwarts Legacy will allow you to keep playing, freely exploring the school of magic and its surroundings. This will allow you to complete any secondary activities that you may have left behind to focus on the main quest.

But it doesn't end here, because several new missions will be triggered right after finishing the main story.

A new story arc called “Prepare for the O.W.L.S.” will be divided into two new main missions, which will effectively decree the end of your experience at Hogwarts:

  • Speak with Professor Weasley
  • Complete your Wizard’s Field Guide

The first involves only a short dialogue with Professor Weasley, while the second tasks you with looking for all the pages of the Wizard’s Field Guide scattered around the world of Hogwarts Legacy, so it’s an activity that could certainly take a long time.

Finally, another mission will wrap the story up in full Harry Potter style: "The House Cup." This mission will ask you to "attend the end-of-year feast in the Great Hall," during which it’ll be decided which house will have won the annual challenge between Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw.

Again, you'll likely have to work a bit to get there: the mission requires level 34, which is roughly seven levels above the one required to complete the final main story quest.

Does Hogwarts Legacy have New Game Plus?

There is no New Game+ mode in Hogwarts Legacy at launch. There is also no word currently on whether Avalanche Software plans to add such a mode, but it sure would be nice to go back to the start of the game with the best Hogwarts Legacy spells
