As a survival crafting game, LEGO Fortnite is going to have some creepy crawlies out to get you. Setting aside what might lurk beneath the world’s surface, the plains and woods of the world are littered with tiny spiders and giant wolves looking to give you a beating – plus the monsters that come out at night.

If you want to keep yourself safe then you’ll need to craft yourself a sword, but that’s not something you can do right away in LEGO Fortnite. We’ll explain what you need to do to craft a sword.

A sword is a vital tool to protect yourself in LEGO Fortnite / Epic Games

To craft a shortsword, you first need to make a Crafting Station, and then the Lumber Mill will unlock. Make yourself one of those and you’ll now be able to craft planks and wooden rods – or get a villager to do it by learning how to assign jobs to villagers in LEGO Fortnite at that link.

Go back to the Crafting Station and you’ll now see that the recipe for the shortsword and basic shield has unlocked. You’ll need five wooden rods, and then you can make a basic sword that will deal decent damage to the enemies you’ll encounter on your travels.
