Use these tips and tricks to help make the most of your time in Honolulu, Yokohama, and Kamurocho

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is out now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and we’ve been smashing through the game over the last few weeks. Infinite Wealth is absolutely massive, with heaps of side content to explore, three whole maps to run around in, and one of the longest stories in the series’ history.

It can also be a little bit difficult to wrap your head around all at once, especially if you’re new to turn-based RPGs. Even if you’re a long-time player, there are plenty of new and unique features and systems in Infinite Wealth, and it can be very overwhelming at times.

That’s why we’ve put together this list of tips and tricks for new Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth players, to help you make the most of your time in Honolulu.

Sujimon is the answer to your prayers

In Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, if you’re ever asking “how do I do this?” there’s a 70% chance the answer is to play Sujimon. Want to get a bunch of money quickly? Sujimon. Want to get stronger before the next big fight? Sujimon. Bored of regular fights? Sujimon will fix that. Wondering what the best class is for Ichiban? It’s hero. Just kidding, it’s Sujimancer, which you unlock through playing Sujimon. There’s really nothing Sujimon can’t do.

Stock up on food and drinks

There are a few different ways to heal up in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, but most of them have drawbacks. Healing in battle with a skill is a nice idea, but it uses up precious MP – a very scarce resource in the early game – and there are no skills for restoring MP in battle. Outside of battle, you could use the same skills at the same cost, or you could head to a restaurant or healing spot, both of which aren’t ideal. That’s where food and drink come in. You’ll want to stock up on a healthy supply of hot dogs and tacos, as well as just about any MP-restoring drink you can get your hands on. In and out of battle, food and drinks will come in very handy, so they’re easily the best thing to spend your money on.

Positioning is everything

Infinite Wealth expands on Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s JRPG combat system by adding positioning, where you get to move around a little bit before executing your attacks. It’s absolutely vital that you take this system into account, as good positioning will let you knock enemies into others to do more damage, push enemies into your allies to, well, do more damage, and even do special combo attacks later on that, you guessed it, do more damage. Most restorative skills have an area of effect on allies too, so positioning can really make or break a tough fight.

Get to know your party

As you progress through Infinite Wealth, you’ll unlock a host of wonderful characters that will join your party, and it’s in your best interest to get to know them very well. On top of simply learning more about them, increasing your friendship level unlocks powerful new abilities in combat, lets your allies learn inherited moves from other classes, and more. Spending time with your party members and participating in their Drink Link events is all but necessary to get through some of the tough fights in the game, so don’t neglect your friendships. Heck, maybe even do some karaoke together.

Swap jobs, even if you don’t need to

In Chapter 5, you’ll unlock the ability to switch jobs, and the ability to unlock even more jobs, provided Ichiban’s personality skills are high enough. While you might be happy with how a character is performing in battle, you should always switch everyone into a new job, at least for a few seconds, before moving on. This is because it will unlock the starting abilities from those jobs as inherited skills, which lets you use them no matter which job you choose. Some of these skills are very powerful and very useful, so it’s definitely worth unlocking them right away just to have them in your pocket.

Don’t ignore substories

You might be tempted to rush through the story and ignore all the side activities until later in the game. We can tell you from experience that playing this way will make things pretty difficult for you. Sub stories are a major part of the Like a Dragon experience, and if you want to keep your levels up and have good equipment as you progress through the game, you should do as many of them as you can bear. Some of them are silly, yes, but most of them give great rewards that will help you in battle. The entire game is balanced around you doing at least some of the sub stories, so if you’re finding you’re having a difficult time, your best bet is to spend a couple hours picking up sub stories you neglected previously.

Mix up your damage types

Like any good JRPG, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth has a dense, varied combat system, with a bunch of different damage types. There’s the usual elemental damage, like fire, water, and electric, but there’s also blunt damage, slashing damage, and ranged damage, all of which are types that an enemy can be weak to. Your best bet is to make your team composition and even your individual party members as varied as possible when it comes to damage types, so you’re always prepared to exploit any weakness your enemy has.
