If you’ve played any of Like A Dragon: Ishin!, then you will have noticed that not all abilities and heat moves are available to you at the start of the game. In the main menu, there are skill trees, where you can unlock new abilities every time you level up. However, a number of these abilities are locked off at the start, and you need to fulfill certain requirements in order to unlock them.

Here’s how to unlock all the abilities in Like A Dragon: Ishin!

Hit the gym

There are three dojos in Kyo that will help you unlock the majority of your skills. Each of them have a different requirement in order to move on to the next level. Here’s all the dojos, and what you need to do at each of them.

  • Ginryu Dojo - Wild Dancer and Swordsman master
    • Near Rakunai Shrine
    • After each ability you unlock, he will ask to see a certain sword. This will start with a ‘Fine’ grade sword, which will have a green symbol and two triangles next to it. Next is blue with three triangles, purple with four triangles and finally yellow with five triangles. You can forge these at the blacksmiths. The better the hammer you use the higher the grade.
  • Komaki Dojo - Brawler master
    • Near Teradaya Inn
    • After each ability, Komaki will ask you to try it out before teaching you the next one. You will need to go out and do one to five battles to continue, though you don’t have to defeat them in the Brawler style.
  • Unyuan - Gunman Master
    • The bottom of East Umekojicho, Rakugai
    • William doesn’t want much from you to teach you his skills. After every ability, he will give you a one-hit kill challenge against a number of men. Beat this to move on.

Stunning revelations

Once you complete the dojo you will notice that there are two skills you haven’t unlocked yet. These are skills unlocked using a ‘Book of Revelations’. These books contain one skill each, and inspiration will have to strike Kiryu in order to proceed. When you read each books’ description it will tell you what you need to do in order to unlock it.

If you notice a Heat Action available when you don’t expect it, press the Heat Action button to unlock the new skill. You will know you have done it correctly because a cutscene will play where Inspiration will strike Kiryu. There is a quick time event to complete this the first time. After inspiration has struck you can unlock the skill in the skill tree.

The first Books of Revelations are given to you by the masters themselves. Once you have learned all the abilities they have to offer, they will challenge you to a fight. These fights are quite tricky, particularly if you haven’t invested in that particular skill tree. However, if you overcome them you will be given the first Book of Revelation for each skill.

The other four books are found as part of the side missions. You can find these in the Scarecrow Chateau in Sannocho Rakugai, and by completing the Wanted Man missions with the Tachibanigumi on the top floor of Mukurogai.

Level up

You may notice that after you reach level 25 in a certain fighting style you have nowhere else to go. You can actually access a second skill tree after this one which will power up each ability. In order to access this, you must first reach level 25 in the skill you want to progress in, and also have an orb in every single slot of the first skill tree.

Once you have done this you can return to the master of that fighting style and challenge them to another fight. This one should be much easier now that you are a much higher level, and have unlocked all the skills. After you complete this you will be faced with a new empty skill tree, and you can earn orbs for that style again. The level cap for each style will now be extended to 50 as well.
