While it can take a while to work your way into another person’s life to the point where you can get married in My Time at Sandrock, earning the trust and friendship of an animal companion is much easier and, for some, more rewarding.

If you wander the outskirts of Sandrock enough then you’ll encounter a variety of different animals around the town, many of which can be adopted and kept as pets. You have to satisfy a few different conditions before you can adopt a pet though, so we’ll walk you through the process.

Before you can adopt a pet, you’ll need to complete the How to Tune your Banjo, which acts as a tutorial mission for adopting pets. This side quest will become available shortly after completing the main quest, Mint Condition, which is part of the bridge storyline.

Once you’ve completed that mission, you’ll need to prepare an Animal House, which you can craft on a Worktable with 2 Hardwood Planks and 2 Basic Leather. With the house ready you just need to befriend an animal to live in it. To adopt an animal, you must reach at least the ‘Buddy’ friendship level, which is two full hearts on the social menu, or a total of 200RP.

Like any other NPC, you earn RP with the animals by talking to them and giving them gifts every day. We have a full guide on the best gifts for every pet in My Time at Sandrock if you need to know what the best things to give your desired pet are.

How to abandon a pet – My Time at Sandrock

If you decide you’re a heartless monster and don’t want your pet anymore, you can abandon them by giving them a Goodbye Meatball which can be bought from the Mysterious Man for 500 Gols.
