“New Mega-Evolutions” has been the cry of a portion of the Pokémon fanbase for a long time. However, after Generation 7 didn’t add any, and Gen 8 removed Mega-Evolution altogether, our hopes and dreams of cool new mega forms were dashed.

However, that flame has now been reignited with the reveal of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, as not only is it set in the Kalos region, but the tease trailer itself ended with the Mega-Evolution symbol, which must surely mean the mechanic is returning.

With that in mind, we’re getting our hopes up again that maybe new mega forms are on the way in this game, and we’ve picked out our wishlist of Pokémon that deserve new Mega-Evolutions.

Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja

This one is a no-brainer.

If Z-A follows the patterns established in Arceus, then it’s likely the three starter Pokémon for this game will not include any of the original Gen 6 trio, but they should still be catchable out in the world.

If that’s the case, it would be quite the snub to not give them new Mega-Evolutions. Considering that the Gens 1 and 3 trios both got megas but the actual stars of Kalos never did, this is the time to right that long-standing wrong. Plus, it’ll be fun to watch the Greninja haters lose their minds at whatever the new form looks like.

Talonflame

As anyone who read my list of the best Flying Pokémon will know, I’m more than a little in love with Talonflame. It’s one of the best bird Pokémon ever made, and I would be thrilled to see it get bigger and better than ever with a Mega-Evolution.

I don’t care if Speed Boost would make it game-breaking, I would love it, and that’s really all that matters.

Flygon

It’s been said so much that it’s become a meme. When people listed their requests for new megas, Flygon was always at the top of the list, and many were disappointed when ORAS didn’t deliver. Once again, Game Freak has the opportunity to make up for so many years of hurt here by giving Flygon the final form we’ve always dreamed of.

Skarmory

Single-evolution Pokémon are perfect candidates to get megas. They’re often fairly powerful for single-player, but never powerful enough to compete on the grander stage, and a mega form would give them more of an edge. Plus, they look cool – Mega Absol sends their regards.

Skarmory would be an excellent choice for this. While Corviknight has already shown us what a bulky armored bird would look like, Skarmory could get a more sleek design along with a hefty speed boost to make it more like a jet plane.

Hawlucha

As Kalos is the setting, Gen 6 Pokémon feel more likely to receive new megas, so let’s level up this luchador while we’re at it.

We’ve seen a couple of different takes on wrestler Pokémon between Hawlucha and Incineroar, and a Mega Hawlucha could be the best of both worlds. It could be that perfect pro-wrestler with the quickness and high-flying ability of a luchador, but with bulk and muscle to unleash raw power. Maybe going too far into muscle definition would be weird, but a generally bulkier design would be cool.

Crobat

This poison bat is already a pretty cool-looking Pokémon, and one that you have to work for because it evolves via friendship. What better expression of that friendship than a cool new Mega-Evolution? There are a few directions to go with it. I can imagine a version of it with eight wings and a massive body with gnashing fangs – basically Giratina but purple – but I could also see it getting smaller and faster too.

Haxorus

Haxorus is a cool-looking Dragon-type, but it often gets overlooked by the other dragons around it. There isn’t much room to shine when Garchomp and Hydreigon are around stealing up all the glory. A menacing new mega form would be the perfect cure for this, and like Garchomp, would be a fantastic reward for players who go out of their way to raise these dragons from their baby forms.

Tauros & Miltank

Pokemon Tauros

This unassuming duo of Pokémon has a lot of potential for mega forms.

Tauros is self-explanatory, really. All you need is to make its body bigger, give it more threatening horns, and make it ridiculously fast, but don’t count Miltank out. Sure, it may end up being a bit of a meme, but you can make cow sufficiently intimidating if you really try – have you ever seen the giant cow monster in Black & White 2, for example?

Obscure examples aside, if these two mega forms were designed to be cohesive as a duo it would be a lot of fun.

Meowstic

The Pokémon Company International

Meowstic is a Pokémon you may have overlooked when you initially played Kalos games, and that’s what makes it a great choice for a Mega Evolution. Of course, we can use them to make fan favorites even cooler, but we can also add a new layer to an underrated gem.

Lore-wise, Meowstic has some insane psychic abilities, so giving it a form that is dripping in that pure mental power would be a fantastic opportunity to make people fall in love with this overlooked kitten.

Aegislash

Aegislash is already a very cool design and a very powerful Pokémon, but I think we all know there’s more potential to be had here. The sword and shield design looks fantastic, but a Mega-Evolution could alter it in so many ways. It could change from a knight’s sword into a deadly katana, or simply grow even grander and more regal than it already is, with a Pyroar-adorned hilt and the crest of Kalos on its shield.
