If you’re just creating your first character in Starfield, you’ve noticed that the Dream Home trait in Starfield gives you a house and a mortgage to repay from the get-go, so you might be wondering how much you’ll be paying every week, what exactly you’re getting, and if it’s actually worth it.

You may have already picked the trait and started the game, so in this guide, we’ll also explain where you can find your dream house in Starfield, what you can do with it, and how the mortgage repayment works.

Our complete guide on the Dream Home trait in Starfield has everything you need to know.

How does the Dream Home trait work in Starfield?

As the character creator vaguely explains, the Dream Home trait gives you a luxurious house you can customize to your liking, located on a largely peaceful planet. The downside to being a property owner though is that you also have a mortgage with GalBank, which requires weekly payments.

Initially, the game does not elaborate on how weekly payments work, how much is due every week, and what happens if you miss a payment, it only tells you there's a 125,000 credit mortgage.

You can find more details about your dream home financials by visiting GalBank's New Atlantis branch. That's on the planet Jemison in the Alpha Centauri system, just where the Lodge is. The GalBank HQ and office is a tall skyscraper in the Commercial District of New Atlantis. There you have to talk with Landry Hollifeld.

At any time during the game, you can visit GalBank and either repay your mortgage in full, if you have 125,000 credits to spare, or foreclose the mortgage and lose the house for good. In the meantime, you can enjoy your dream home just by paying 500 credits every week.

The weekly payments are made only when you visit the house, so you shouldn't worry about missing one. If a new payment is due, your home will be locked, and when you try to enter, you’ll be prompted to make the weekly payment.

If you don’t have the money, you will just have to leave and won’t be able to use the house, but you can always come back, pay the 500 credits, and go inside.

Where is your Dream Home in Starfield?

You will be able to travel to your home right after you complete the “One Small Step” mission in the main storyline. A side mission called “Dream Home” will appear in your mission list, in the All Missions tab, prompting you to visit the house, along with another task to see Landry Hollifeld about the mortgage.

Your dream house is located on the planet Nesoi in the Olympus system. Olympus is very close to Alpha Centauri, which will be your base of operations during most of Starfield’s main story. You’ll be able to grav jump from Alpha Centauri to Olympus from very early into the game, even with your starting ship.

Nesoi is the first planet in Olympus, and the location of your dream home on the planet will be clearly marked in your starmap.

What’s in your Dream Home and how to customize it?

The house you get from the Dream Home trait is quite spacious, with two floors you can customize and decorate to your liking and needs.

The lower floor features a vast living room with kitchen space, which hosts a cooking station where you can craft food, and an adjacent bathroom. On the upper floor, you get another spacious room with another bathroom next to it, and a hallway connecting it to two bedrooms and a nice big rooftop terrace.

The house comes almost completely empty, except for the kitchen on the lower floor, the fully furnished bathrooms, and some decoration on the rooftop spaces, including a ping-pong table and barbecue.

To decorate your dream home in Starfield, you need to interact with the console you will find opposite to the house’s main entrance on the lower floor.

In build mode, you’ll be able to walk freely around the house, to craft and place all sorts of furniture, decorations, display cases, crafting tables, and more. Of course, to build any of these, you need to gather the required materials.

Is the Starfield Dream Home trait worth it?

By now you should have a very clear idea of what you’re getting with the Dream Home trait. You get a house, you pay 500 credits every week if you want you use it, until you decide to either repay the full mortgage or foreclose.

It’s a great starting option if you’re into having your own space to keep and showcase everything you have and a base of operations that will evolve throughout your playthrough.

The Dream Home is also the most spacious of the homes available in Starfield, so it gives you more room to express yourself and add handy objects that will help you with your quests.

There will be other options to own a home, coming either from another trait, completing a specific questline, or just buying one, so you should also check out our Starfield player homes guide for the full list.

Whichever home you choose, there are countless designs of furniture to choose from, and you can add displays to showcase weapons, helmets, backpacks, and other items you’ve grabbed along your journey.

The home comes only with a cooking station, but adding workbenches, as well as a mission board and a self-service bounty clearance terminal can turn the house into a true HQ for all your space adventures.

Nevertheless, the Dream Home trait is by no means a necessity for your main story missions, as the Lodge offers all the amenities that you can build inside your home, such as a bed to sleep on, workbenches, and storage.

So, ultimately, just like many other things you can do in Starfield, owning a home is there as an option and it can be fun if you are into making a place your own, but it’s also perfectly fine if you don’t want to engage with that aspect of the game.
